About What's the Score?

Most products that harm our health are bought without any real sense of what is in them. We built this app to close that gap.

Who built it

What's the Score was founded by Bryan Edward Long, MD — a practicing physician and health-tech entrepreneur — together with a small engineering team. The scoring methodology is physician-developed and rooted in peer-reviewed evidence on ingredients, ultra-processing, and nutritional density.

Before building WTS, Bryan ran a telehealth practice and watched too many preventable conditions trace back to the same root cause: products marketed as "natural" or "healthy" that, under the label, are anything but. The decision to build a scanner came from the exam room.

What we score

Food, beverages (including beer, wine, and spirits with category-specific chemistry — we are the only app in this space that scores a wine headache risk from sulfites, tannins, and histamines), beauty and personal care, oral care, pet food, and household cleaners. Every product gets a 0 to 100 score based on ingredient safety, processing level, nutritional profile, third-party certifications, and active recall status.

What makes us different

Three things, in plain English:

We name the concern. Most scoring apps give you a number. We tell you exactly which ingredient dragged the score — "contains Hydrogenated oil (trans fat)" — with the specific health reason. Knowledge, not a verdict.

We suggest a cleaner swap. Low-scoring product? We surface a same-category alternative with the delta made obvious ("alternative scores 79 vs 59 — 49% cleaner"). One tap to the better choice.

95% of subscription revenue funds charity. You pick a cause in the app; ninety-five cents of every dollar in premium fees routes to it via every.org. The remaining 5% covers payment processor fees. We cover ongoing engineering out of the B2B API and affiliate revenue, not subscriber fees. See the API docs for the B2B side.

Our mission is simple: make the healthier product the easier product to choose — and put the pressure on manufacturers to clean up their labels.

How we fund it

Three revenue lines: (1) a premium subscription inside the iOS and Android apps, of which 95% is charitable; (2) affiliate commissions when you buy a scanned or recommended product through our tagged Amazon / Organic Wine Exchange / Spirit Hub links; (3) a tiered B2B API for companies building nutrition, retailer, or research tools on top of our scoring. That is it — we do not sell user data, we do not run display ads, we do not monetize your scan history.
