Best Toothpastes — Fluoride, Hydroxyapatite, or Both
The ADA still endorses fluoride as the single most evidence-based cavity preventative. Hydroxyapatite is emerging as an equally effective, remineralisation-focused alternative with decades of Japanese use behind it. Skip SLS and activated charcoal — both are irritants with zero caries benefit.
What to look for
- Fluoride OR hydroxyapatite as the active
- No SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) — mouth ulcer trigger
- No activated charcoal (abrasive, stains composite fillings)
- Xylitol as the sweetener when present
- Accepted by the ADA or contains at least 1000 ppm fluoride
